I had three birch trees that that happened to, two of them died within the year, the other was very unhappy for years but lived; it had aphid infestation constantly, didn't grow well, and fungus problems.
After eight years, it finally looks like it may have recovered.
I'm not a tree expert so all I can share is that story, maybe someone else can shed some light on what to do to avoid the prolonged problems I had.

| I had a pear tree chewed by a dog and it looked like that. I literally wrapped it in bandage like a human leg and put up chicken wire to keep the dog away. It not only recovered, it put out pears the next year, and grew very fast. It was always very healthy and productive until it suffered vandalism by insane neighbors. |

I'd get rid of it. It looks very badly damaged.
We have a little blue spruce that was badly damaged by my grandfather who got a little excited with the weed whip...
The tree is 15 years old and is about 2 feet tall and has averaged about an inch of growth per year.
I finally mulched around it, gave it a little fertilizer and kept it watered... last year it added 3" and this year it has added another 4" and it's still growing. But it took like 15 years to recover... I'm surprised it didn't die, stubborn little bugger. |

Don't take this as a joke, but I hear that Duct tape is actually good for helping plants mend. It provides a barrier over the wound and keeps bacteria/insects/pests out. It's supposed to be the equivalent of a bandaid for plants.
did a google search, and found this link. Hope it helps.
